Small engraved endpiece illustration centered on the winged head of an allegorical Father Time on which rests an hourglass, and surrounded by a Baroque scrolled decorative design of foliage, flowers, and torches. The head is surmounted by a banner with the motto “Veritas filia Temporis” [“Truth is the daughter of Time”]. It was engraved as an endpiece for the Apocrypha section of the King James Bible, an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England that had originally been commissioned in 1604. The words “The End of the Apocrypha” appears above the design. The British Museum has this engraving in its collection (see References below).

Description

Michael Burghers was a Dutch-born engraver who emigrated to England in 1672-73. He worked in Oxford as assistant to the engraver David Loggan from 1673 and either was appointed or called University Engraver after Loggan’s death in 1692. At Oxford, he engraved the university almanacs.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual expected wear and toning, and soft creasing to lower portion of sheet.
