An Anglo-Indian rosewood arm chair having a shaped back and side panels, profusely decorated with brass foliate and geometric inlay. The trapezoidal seat is similarly inlaid in brass, and the chair has front scrolled legs. It might have been a salesman’s sample or just a whimsy, to show off the accomplished and beautiful inlaid brass technique.

The term “Anglo Indian School” refers to works of art and decorative arts produced in India in the British taste during the British colonial presence there. This period was roughly from the mid 18th century, when British colonial settlement and rule in India began, to the mid 20th century, when India achieved independence. Anglo Indian furniture was frequently made of rosewood with brass inlay in the British Regency style combining Indian styles and techniques. Ebony and ivory were other popular materials.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual light toning, wear, handling.
