A whimsical pictorial map of the West Indies, boldly illustrated primarily in shades of red and blue. It shows the Caribbean region ranging from the Bahamas and Cuba, and to the northern tip of South America. The map features major and minor islands, named though with little cartographic detail, including Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Windward and Leeward Islands (Guadeloupe, Barbados, St. Vincent, etc.), the Lesser Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago. Playful illustrations of a pirate looking through a spyglass, a palm tree, and dramatic Columbus-age explorer ships are drawn in the Atlantic Ocean. In the Caribbean Sea, a mermaid sits elegantly on a rock and a nearby whale spouts water. The compass rose in the lower left is rendered in a similar style and color as the decorative border.

Description

This map has no publication or other information, though based on its style format it was likely done in the West Indies in the 1960s for the tourist souvenir market, perhaps specifically commissioned for a cruise line.

Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning, handling, wear. Later mounted on stiff backing, appears to be stable and not affecting the map.
