Globe, Table, 6-Inch Diameter, Terrestrial World, Deco Metal Stand, Hammond, New York, Late 1920s
C.S. Hammond & Co. 6-Inch Terrestrial Table Globe
New York, Brooklyn, Boston: c. 1927-30
10 inches high
A handsome small terrestrial globe, an ideal size for desk or shelf. The terrestrial globe surmounted by metal hour circle, in a verdigris Art Deco stand, the curved inclination arm extending from an open triangular base with rounded corners and squared front. Oceans are green (originally blue, yellowed over time). Geographic entities are colored in shades of yellow, red, brown, green and orange; nations have thick colored outlines. This globe shows present-day St. Petersburg, Russia, as “Leningrad,” therefore, it was made after 1924. Further, it shows Constantinople rather than Istanbul, indicating a date of manufacture before 1930. In addition, it shows Central Australia as a separate territory, limiting its period from 1927 to 1930. Steamship routes are indicated.
