Globe, American, Nystrom, Terrestrial World, 18-Inch Floor Globe, 4-leg Phyfe Stand, Chicago, c. 1927-30

W. & A.K. Johnston, Ltd. (globe gores)
18-Inch Terrestrial Floor Globe
A.J. Nystrom, Chicago: c. 1927-30
Mahogany four-legged Duncan Phyfe style stand
40 inches high; 24 inches diameter overall including horizon band

A terrestrial globe in calibrated full meridian, the horizon with engraved paper calendar and zodiac, raised on a mahogany Duncan Phyfe style stand. The stand has a turned central standard with reeded baluster, on four downswept reeded legs with carved classical leaves, ending in brass animal paw casters. Railways, “submarine telegraph cables” and warm and cold ocean currents are indicated. Oceans are colored blue-green (yellowed varnish over blue), geographic entities are in various shades of yellow, orange, brown and green. This globe shows present-day St. Petersburg, Russia, as “Leningrad,” therefore, it was made after 1924. Further, it shows Constantinople rather than Istanbul, indicating a date of manufacture before 1930. In addition, it shows Central Australia as a separate territory, limiting its period from 1927 to 1931.

This globe was sold by A.J. Nystrom, a major school supply house in America in the 20th century. It incorporates globe gores by the famous and prolific British globe maker, W. & A.K. Johnston, in partnership with Nystrom. The stand was likely provided by Kittinger, one of the leading American furniture makers of the 20th Century (based on similar examples with a Kittinger cartouche rather than Nystrom). As such, the stand is unusually high quality for a floor globe of this period and probably was intended for home use. For more information about the manufacturers, see our Guide to Globe Makers entries on W. & A.K. Johnston, A.J. Nystrom, and Kittinger.
