A floor-standing adjustable antique George II British tripod mahogany reading or book stand. Of typical form, it has two-part table top as closed, the upper portion a backrest hinged to the lower portion and opening up to an angle of 90 degrees. The turned stand of dense heavy mahogany has a central baluster central standard with fluted columnar support, raised on three cabriole legs ending in pad feet. The angle of the upper part of the top is adjusted at various angles by an inset central metal ratchet mechanism in the lower portion, and has a thin horizontal book support at the lower edge.
Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light aging and wear. Front edge of top formerly with a different book support mechanism, now replaced with a decorative brass strip.
