Bulldog Form Inkwell Box
English, 2nd Half 19th Century
Carved lignum vitae
4.5 inches high, 3.25 inches wide, 4 inches deep

A charming inkwell in the form of a bulldog head with bright eyes that opens with the top of the head on hinges to reveal a brass cup with a hinged domed cap. The bulldog is realistically carved of lignum vitae wood with dark stained or painted highlights. It has orange glass eyes with black pupils and wears a leather collar. The interior brass cup originally held a simple open glass bottle insert for the ink, now lacking.
