The terrestrial globe in simple wire half meridian, with ebonized wooden disks at each pole, raised on turned ebonized wooden stand with central standard and circular base. Ocean line routes indicated. Major European nations are color coded to match countries in their commonwealth, their colonies and mandates, etc. The Commonwealth of British Nations is shown in red. France and French colonies are shaded green. Italy and Italian colonies -- including Eritrea, ruled by the Kingdom of Italy until 1941 -- are shown in red-striped yellow. Other countries and territories are colored in various shades, with only major place names. Oceans light blue-green. The globe shows “Istanbul (Constantinople)” -- the use of both names indicating the globe was made shortly after Constantinople was renamed Istanbul.
Strand Publications was a mid-20th Century British publisher, well known for their Bookano Stories series of pop-up books for children. Accordingly, it may be presumed that this globe was intended for students, particularly with its simple stand and cartography. The globe bears a striking resemblance to globes by the British globe maker George Philip & Sons, and was probably manufactured by them for Strand. This attribution is further supported by the cartouche, which is a paste-on overlabel (as issued) likely covering a Philip cartouche.
