A trio of painted illustrations for publication showing assortments of tropical animals in lush jungle environments from three continents. Animals depicted literally range from A to Z, including an aardvark, leopard, llama, parakeet, armadillo, orangutan, tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, gorilla, cobra and zebra. There are mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and lush flora. These were presumably produced for a natural history book or series of educational posters on animals and are realistic in details, but with a touch of whimsy in the animals' expressions and vivid colors. Each illustration is titled in faint pencil in the margin. In one, the animals are numbered, presumably to correspond to text.
These three paintings were acquired from the same vendor along with another painting of North American animals having the same dimensions, which we also now offer for sale. The four paintings probably were created for the same book or series of posters, and together, make an attractive set of animals from four continents. See North American Animals.
As in Britain, France and Germany, the Netherlands embraced the progressive social and pedagogic ideals of the 18th century Enlightenment and began producing a great quantity of educational literature for both children and adults. The invention of low-cost color printing in the 19th century had an immediate impact on European and American children's books, allowing them to enhance book illustration. These early-20th-century natural history illustrations represents a continuation of that tradition.
Condition: Two of the works on illustration board as issued, the other a paper sheet unmounted . All very good, the colors bright, with the usual overall light toning and wear. Some minor abrasions. Some minor scattered staining, foxing, bumps, pinholes in margins, can be matted out.
