Scholarly technological history of Greek and Roman water-lifting devices with over 170 diagrams, illustrations, and photographs showing excavated structures and their mechanisms, along with designs.  Although printed 20 years ago, this book is now quite rare and desired.  

John Peter Oleson, the author, is an archaeologist, Classics scholar and expert on ancient technology, particularly related to maritime archaeology and water-supply systems. This book is one of nine he has written, the most recent being Greek and Roman Technology: A Sourcebook (London: Routledge, 1997), and several chapters of Handbook of Ancient Water Technology (Leiden: Brill, 1999). He has directed or participated in underwater excavations at a number of Roman harbor sites in Italy and Israel.  He received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Harvard University and has been a professor in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, since 1976.  Oleson is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. 

Condition:  Interior contents generally very good with little to no wear.  Covers very good with usual light wear to extremities and fading.  No dust jacket, probably as issued.
