Modernist style armillary sphere with chromed concentric rings arranged around a central brass sphere, mounted on a chrome tripod stand. An armillary sphere is an instrument that is traditionally used as an astronomical demonstration device or sundial. The nine rings on this one represent the orbits of the nine planets (including Pluto) around the sun, which is represented by the brass sphere. For more information about armillary spheres see our Glossary of Globe Terminology.

Armillary spheres are fashionable lately. The upscale home décor web site Apartment Therapy (apartmenttherapy.com) recommended the contemporary chandelier shown below left in a November 23, 2009 post on "masculine lighting fixtures," and the pop sensation Lady Gaga performed in an armillary costume on Saturday Night Live (below right).

Condition: Generally fine with little wear.
