The terrestrial globe surmounted by brass hour circle, within metal calibrated meridian, raised on an Art Deco walnut stand, the horizon band with figured zebra wood decorated frieze with ivory inlays professionally restored, rotating 360 degrees on a bulbous wooden meridian holder resting on a medial cross stretcher, the four tapered downswept legs, ending in cross-hatched decoration at the feet.
Oceans are blue, now faded to green, geographic entities generally cream color, now beige. A nearly identical globe is shown in the 1937 Rand McNally catalog (number 337) as the finest floor globe then offered by Rand McNally, available with a choice of 18-inch political globe, 16-inch standard globe or 16-inch antiquated globe on a carved solid walnut base. The stand is in keeping with the Art Deco furniture style of the period, associated with Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, a leading French designer who contributed to the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs. A contemporary reviewer of the so-called Art Deco Exposition wrote: "The genius of Ruhlmann endows us with furniture of the most refined forms, great grand nephews of the most delightful Louis XVI pieces." This stand is similarly elegant and well made with exotic wood highlights, having a Louis XVI influence in the form of the tapered leg, but decidedly Art Deco overall.
