The terrestrial globe is set with the north pole mounted perpendicular to a turned ebonized wooden stand, with central standard and dish base. The cartography is simple, the continents outlined in green, red, and orange; and shaded in green, red, orange, and yellow. This globe shows St. Petersburg, Russia, as Petrograd, which dates it to between 1914 and 1924. 3-inch globes by Philip are very rare.
George Philip & Son began as a map and atlas publisher in Liverpool, England in 1834. In 1902, the firm relocated to London and emerged as one of the major globe producers of the 20th century. Read more on our Guide to Globe Makers.
