The 18-inch globe in calibrated full metal meridian, the horizon with engraved paper calendar and zodiac, raised on a mahogany Duncan Phyfe style stand with turned and reeded central standard, on four downswept reeded legs each with carved waterleaf decoration, ending in brass animal paw casters.
This globe was made by Johnston for export to Chicago school supplier A.J. Nystrom. The stand is mostly likely supplied by Kittinger, one of the leading American furniture makers of the 20th century, based on the style and quality of the stand, and a similar known example. The stand is unusually high quality for a floor globe of this period. W. & A.K. Johnston was among the most important figures in the production of globes in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century.
