| Bridges, a city surveyor, published this map of old New York based on what was known as the Mangin-Goerck Plan—a survey that incorporated suggestions for improving the layout of lower Manhattan. Bridges is best known for publishing John Randel, Jr.'s The Commissioner's Plan shortly thereafter—the genesis of the gridiron layout of the streets of upper Manhattan. Bridges' version of the Mangin-Goerck Plan generally appeared as a fold-out map in Picture of New York by Dr. Samuel Mitchell. The example of the map we offer was separately issued—perhaps by Bridges himself—who was known to have made his version of The Commissioner's Plan available for sale on rollers as well. The surface is a bit worn; still this is incredibly handsome and scarce as a miniature Federal-period map on rollers, important in the history of the mapping of Manhattan. |
