Large and detailed view of New York City issued in the year of America's centennial as an "extra supplement" to the Illustrated London News. From the vantage point atop New Jersey's Bergen Hill, a maturing Central Park is shown amidst the early stages of urban expansion on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side. New York is depicted as a busy port city, with a variety of boats active in the Hudson and East Rivers. Brooklyn, Queens and Northern New Jersey are also shown. Of historical note are the two towers of the Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1875, pending the construction of the bridge between them to span the waters of the East River.
