Embroidered
map of Long Island in wooden frame, decorated with modes of transportation
and buildings from its history. A tall ship, sailboats and an ocean
liner travel the waters, a zeppelin floats in the air, and a blue car
on the island. Tepees are on the opposite shore, while the island is
decorated with a windmill, a church, the Montauk Lighthouse and the
Long Island ducks traditionally raised there. A whale in the Sound and
a sea monster in the Atlantic Ocean add touches of whimsy. The map is
decorated with a compass rose and the words Long Isle Land in fancy
lettering, as well as a heraldic emblem in the upper left corner.
This
is the second example of such a map known to us. Apparently, they were
issued as an embroidery kit for hobbyists.
