A unique custom-made pictorial map by Donna Walker of Nantucket Island, based on current cartography, hand-painted in a traditional style.  The cartouche of the map is in the form of a scallop shell supported on either side by two fishermen, one in yellow slicker overalls holding a lobster, and the other with a fishing pole and Nantucket Reds.  The three primary lighthouses of Nantucket are shown on the map, along with an extra inset view of Brant Point Lighthouse.  Three other inset illustrations depict the First Congregational Church, the oldest house on the island, and a vignette of the Old Mill supported by a mermaid.  A boat, a whale, and a sea monster decorate the ocean, and a seaplane flies overhead.  The Nantucket Airport’s location is marked by its code letters, “ACK,” drawn on a propeller.  The map also features a decorative vitruvian scroll border that resembles waves.

Donna Walker is an American painter working in oils and watercolors.  She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1994 and her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan in 2000.  Her oil paintings are principally landscape views of picturesque scenes from her travels.  A longtime interest in antique maps and in combining art, travel and history has also led her to create her own watercolor pictorial maps.  Walker’s Map of the Hamptons, commissioned by the George Glazer Gallery, was featured on a two-page spread in In the Spirit of the Hamptons, a pictorial history and contemporary review of the Long Island beach resort towns by Kelly Killoren-Bensimon (New York: Assouline Publishing, 2002).

The George Glazer Gallery represents Ms. Walker for made-to-order maps of any locale. Please inquire as to how you can purchase this map or commission a pictorial map of your favorite place for your home or vacation getaway.
