Series of 21 pen and ink drawings, including 12 allegorical images of the months of the year shown by zodiac constellations as interpreted in classical mythology, as well as seasons of the year and aspects of the creation of the earth, also as represented in classical mythological stories and figures. The drawings are mostly round, some shaped, and are mounted, as issued, in a rectangular cardboard mat with letterpress title/description. Bound as issued in a handsome green morocco leather binding, with stamped gilt decoration, and having brass lock clasp. Probably a manuscript for a proposed book.
It is possible, though we have been unable to confirm it, that L. Leila Waterhouse Hawkins was related to Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1889), a biological artist and celebrated figure in the history of paleontology who under the direction of scientist Richard Owen made the first drawings, models and life-size sculptures of dinosaurs.
